O-net, Inc., a marriage agency operator based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, surveyed 270 unmarried men and women aged 25 to 34 across Japan about their attitudes toward the grooming of the opposite sex. The rainy season and summer tend to heighten awareness of appearance because of sweat, humidity, and changes in clothing. The survey asked respondents to choose the single most disappointing grooming issue in the opposite sex and also examined whether such issues affect the possibility of developing a romantic relationship. Among men, the top three disappointing grooming issues in women were tied at 18.2%: unremoved body hair, perfume that is too strong, and poorly maintained hair. These were followed by lack of skin or nail care at 11.2%, and heavy makeup and excessive skin exposure at 10.5% each. The results suggest that both overdoing and underdoing grooming can be viewed negatively, and that a natural, appropriate appearance is preferred. Among women, the most disappointing grooming issue in men was poorly maintained hair at 23.6%, followed by lack of skin care at 18.9% and untrimmed facial hair or other body hair at 17.3%. The findings indicate that women particularly associate men’s cleanliness with three areas: hair, skin, and beard care. Asked whether they could develop a relationship with someone whose grooming disappointed them, the most common answer was “depending on the situation,” at 50.7% overall, 58.7% among men, and 41.7% among women. Meanwhile, 33.0% overall said it would be impossible, including 23.8% of men and 43.3% of women. The results suggest that men are relatively more tolerant, while women take a stricter view. Cleanliness has a major impact on first impressions in dating, though relationships may still progress under certain conditions. The online closed survey was conducted from April 28 to April 30, 2026, among 270 unmarried men and women aged 25 to 34 across Japan.
