As the May tax season approaches, the National Institute of Cyber Security (NICS) has warned that hackers are increasingly using tax-related themes, such as tax exemptions or refunds, to send social engineering emails. Some agency staff have mistakenly opened these, resulting in backdoor malware infecting their devices and communicating with relay stations. The NICS advises organizations to strengthen email filtering, implement endpoint detection, and monitor abnormal connections. The public is also urged to remain vigilant and avoid opening suspicious files or attachments in tax-related emails.
