Tibetan exile groups and media outlets have identified the deceased as a Tibetan who self-immolated to call for Tibetan independence. A spokesperson for the New York City Police Department stated that police received a report at approximately 6:30 PM Eastern Time today and found the man with severe burns all over his body upon arrival at the scene. The man was subsequently transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead after resuscitation efforts. Police stated that the case is currently under investigation and the identity of the deceased has not yet been released. According to "Voice of Tibet," a Tibetan exile media outlet, Tibetan activist Loga Rangzen self-immolated in protest after broadcasting a call for Tibetan independence and unity outside the UN headquarters. New York local media amNewYork reported that Rangzen was an Uber driver who went to the scene that day holding a Tibetan flag. amNewYork quoted another Uber driver, Lobsang Paljor, who knew Rangzen through Tibetan community activities. Paljor stated that Rangzen was "very angry about the restrictions imposed by the Chinese government on the Tibetan people." The United States and the European Union have recently expressed concern over China's "Law on the Promotion of National Unity and Progress," which officially took effect this week. This law provides Beijing with a legal basis to take action against individuals outside of China.
