Central News (Central News Agency, Reporter Chang Chi, Hualien County, July 3rd) Taroko National Park suffered damage from the April 3rd earthquake. The main cross-island highway, the only access road, has been under traffic control since the disaster. A man surnamed Wen, allegedly dissatisfied with the long-term traffic management, is suspected of spray-painting red paint and writing obscene characters on public restrooms, tunnels, and traffic control signs within the park. He has been arrested and sent for prosecution. On May 27th, cleaning staff at the Taroko National Park Headquarters reported that the mirror and sink in the public restroom at the Shakadang Trail parking lot were spray-painted with red paint and obscene characters. The Shakadang Tunnel was spray-painted with "Monitored for over a year," and the traffic control signs were also vandalized. Upon receiving the report, the Hualien Xincheng Police Precinct and the 9th Brigade of the 7th Special Police Corps reviewed surveillance footage from the surrounding area and collected evidence, identifying a local man surnamed Wen as a major suspect. Police investigation revealed that Mr. Wen is homeless. While continuing to track his whereabouts, they also increased patrols in areas where he might appear. Yesterday morning, police, accompanied by park rangers, patrolled the Shakadang Trail at the 3-kilometer mark, where they found Mr. Wen and brought him in for questioning. The case has been transferred to the Hualien District Prosecutor's Office for investigation on charges of property damage under the Criminal Code.
