Central News Agency (CNA, Reporter Wang Shu-fen, Taipei, July 2) The Ministry of Agriculture has reported that agricultural losses from two waves of heavy rainfall in June have accumulated to over NT$580 million, with Pingtung County accounting for the largest portion at over NT$300 million. The Ministry of Agriculture issued a press release today stating that the heavy rainfall in late June caused agricultural damage. After consolidating reports from various municipalities and county governments by the Bureau of Agricultural and Food Administration, the Fisheries Agency, and the Animal Industry Department, estimated losses to agricultural products and private facilities reached NT$452.91 million as of 11 AM. Previously, the Ministry of Agriculture had estimated agricultural losses from heavy rains between June 8th and mid-June at approximately NT$130 million. The cumulative agricultural losses for June now stand at approximately NT$583.38 million. The Ministry of Agriculture pointed out that Pingtung County suffered the most significant losses from the June heavy rains, totaling NT$311.12 million. This was followed by Kaohsiung City with NT$80.19 million, Yunlin County with NT$50.80 million, Changhua County with NT$45.51 million, Tainan City with NT$37.64 million, Taoyuan City with NT$19.17 million, Hsinchu County with NT$15.69 million, and Chiayi County with NT$11.58 million. Losses in other counties and cities ranged from tens of thousands to millions of New Taiwan Dollars. According to the Ministry of Agriculture's statistics, the heavy rains in late June were more severe than the previous wave. For agricultural products, the loss amounted to NT$293.52 million, with 3,846 hectares of crops affected. The main crops damaged were guava, followed by banana, orchid, papaya, and lemon.
