Central News Agency (CNA, Hsinchu City, July 2) A ditch next to Sanmin Elementary School in Hsinchu City turned muddy yellow today. DPP Hsinchu City Councilor Cheng Mei-chuan expressed concern about pollution and demanded an investigation. The Hsinchu City government stated that it is suspected to be caused by heavy rain washing upstream sediment into the water, and has contacted the Water Resources Agency to investigate and clarify the exact cause. Cheng Mei-chuan told CNA reporters that she received a complaint from the public today stating that the ditch on the side of Sanmin Elementary School was full of muddy yellow water. Concerned about possible pollution, she immediately began an investigation. The entire ditch, all the way to the vicinity of Gongdao 5th Road, was filled with muddy yellow water. She quickly notified relevant units of the Hsinchu City government to clarify the situation. The Hsinchu City Government's Public Works Department stated in writing that after receiving the report, they dispatched personnel to investigate and simultaneously requested the Ministry of Agriculture's Water Resources Agency to assist in clarifying the water gate opening and closing operations and the overflow mechanism of the check dam, and to determine whether recent heavy rains caused the accumulation of soil and sediment upstream, which was then washed into the ditch during changes in water level or facility operations, causing the water to appear muddy yellow and turbid. The Public Works Department pointed out that the city government will continue to follow up on the investigation results and cooperate closely with the Ministry of Agriculture's Water Resources Agency. After the cause is clarified, necessary improvement measures will be taken depending on the actual situation to maintain the quality of the water environment.
