Central News Agency (Central News Agency Tokyo, July 2nd, Combined News Service) The Japan Coast Guard stated today that on the afternoon of the 1st, the survey ship "Koyo" conducting investigations in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) off the Diaoyu Islands was asked to cease operations by a Chinese coast guard vessel. This is the second consecutive day similar incidents have occurred, and Japan has lodged a protest. According to reports from Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) and "Sankei Shimbun," the Japan Coast Guard revealed that around 4:20 PM on the afternoon of the 1st, while the Japan Coast Guard survey ship "Koyo" was conducting marine research in the EEZ approximately 80 kilometers northwest of the Diaoyu Islands (called Senkaku Islands in Japan), a China Coast Guard vessel demanded via radio, "Cease your investigation and leave immediately." The Japan Coast Guard further pointed out that the "Koyo" was engaged in basic seabed exploration of the continental shelf at the time. Subsequently, up until midnight on the 2nd, the Chinese side made similar demands to cease investigations four more times. The Japanese survey ship responded, "We are conducting lawful investigations in accordance with international law," and continued its work. The Japanese government has protested to China through diplomatic channels, stating, "This investigation is being conducted within our exclusive economic zone, and we cannot accept China's demand to cease operations." A China Coast Guard vessel had also demanded another Japan Coast Guard survey ship, the "Takuya," to stop its investigation in the waters of the EEZ off the main island of Okinawa on the evening of June 30th. This marks the second consecutive day that Chinese coast guard vessels have demanded investigations be halted. This investigation began on the 15th of last month, and the Japan Coast Guard stated that it will continue the survey as planned until the end of this month. (Compiled by Li Jing / Reviewed by Zh
