Central News Agency (CNA, reporter Chang Chi, Hualien County, July 2nd) The pheasant-tailed jacana, a Class II protected species, has entered its breeding season. In Hualien, aquaculture farmers who were originally planning to drain and clean their fish ponds have, following coordination with government departments, agreed to postpone the cleaning. This allows the jacanas to safely raise their young. The breeding season for pheasant-tailed jacanas runs from April to September each year. The Hualien Branch of the Forestry and Conservation Agency stated that during this year's breeding season, some fish ponds were scheduled for cleaning. As this is a critical period for the jacanas' breeding and chick-rearing, the Hualien County Government and the Yuli Township Office facilitated coordination. Aquaculture farmer Gao Shu-hui proactively adjusted her farming schedule, delaying pond cleaning to preserve important breeding habitats, thus enabling the jacanas to breed successfully. Gao Shu-hui expressed her honor in participating in conservation efforts and hopes that more farmers and the public will join in the future to jointly protect wetland ecosystems. The Hualien Branch of the Forestry and Conservation Agency reported that in recent years, they have continuously promoted pheasant-tailed jacana conservation and the creation of friendly habitats in the Hualien-Taitung Rift Valley. In the Sanmin aquaculture area of Shoufeng Township and Yuli Township, a maximum of 102 pheasant-tailed jacanas have been recorded in a single day, including 49 young birds. The Sanmin aquaculture area has also seen 18 breeding nests, making it an important breeding ground for pheasant-tailed jacanas in Hualien. The Hualien Branch stated that the most representative individual is a pheasant-tailed jacana with leg band number "C0." This bird flew nearly 100 kilometers from Kaohsiung's Meinong to Hualien's Sanmin aquaculture area in 2024, marking the first known record of a pheasant-tailed jaca
