Central News Agency (CNA New York, April 1) According to reports from ABC and other media outlets, a daring couple today climbed to the top of New York's Empire State Building unassisted, unfurled a banner calling for world peace at the towering spire, and staged a romantic proposal. Reuters reported that the couple, dressed in sleeveless black outfits, clung to the flashing red antenna tip of the Empire State Building, holding a black banner that fluttered in the wind. The banner bore a message in all-white capital letters: "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace." After approximately 12:30 PM, they began to slowly climb down to a lower platform and stopped there. According to aerial footage from a local news website, one of them knelt on one knee, after which the two embraced, seemingly kissing. Police sources told ABC that the couple were Russian nationals Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus. They remained at the top of the Empire State Building for several minutes while cameras continuously filmed, then slowly climbed down from the spire. According to reports, Beerkus then appeared to propose to his long-time girlfriend Nikolau on the platform, after which both were detained by police. Empire State Building regulations prohibit the wearing of masks or costumes. ABC reported that the couple has accumulated a large following online due to their daring skyscraper climbing challenges around the globe. They frequently post photos of their stunts on social media. Many of their posts show them posing on the edges of buildings at extreme heights.
