SEOUL, June 30 (CNA) -- South Korea's parliament today approved Han Sung-sook, the current minister of SMEs and Startups, as the new prime minister, making her the second woman to hold the post in the nation's history. She previously served as the CEO of Naver, a South Korean internet giant. According to Reuters and Yonhap News Agency, President Lee Jae-myung appointed Han Sung-sook to lead the Ministry of SMEs and Startups last year after taking office, and then nominated her for prime minister on June 7. She now becomes the second prime minister of the Lee Jae-myung administration and the 50th prime minister of South Korea. An plenary session of the National Assembly was held today to vote on Han Sung-sook's appointment. However, the main opposition People Power Party collectively boycotted the vote, arguing she was unqualified. A total of 167 lawmakers from the ruling Democratic Party and other parties, such as the New Reform Party and the Progressive Party, participated in the vote, which passed with 166 votes in favor and 1 invalid vote. The Korean Times previously reported that the Lee Jae-myung administration is striving to promote an innovation-driven economic growth model and accelerate the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into all aspects of the economy. Han Sung-sook's appointment as prime minister will elevate one of South Korea's most renowned tech executives to the core of the government. Han Sung-sook became Naver's first female CEO in 2017. During her five-year tenure, she expanded the company's business scope from traditional search engines to e-commerce, web content, and platform services, successfully driving business growth.
