Central News Agency (CNA Taipei, June 30) The BWF Super 300 Canada Open Badminton Tournament kicks off tonight. A contingent of 23 Taiwanese players will compete in the main draw, including men's singles champion Su Li-yang and mixed doubles pair Liu Chuan-heng/Hsu Yin-hsuan, both aiming to stand on the podium for the second week in a row. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) Super 300 Canada Open, with a total prize money of US$250,000 (approximately NT$7.95 million), has been held since 1957. Taiwan has won 8 championships in the history of the tournament, with men's doubles accounting for the most titles at 3. The most recent victory was last year by the "twin brothers" Lee Fang-jen and Lee Fang-chi in the men's doubles. However, the pair has chosen not to participate this year. According to the tournament draw, Su Li-yang, the 24-year-old men's singles champion at last week's US Open Badminton Tournament, will face Aria Dinata of Indonesia/Croatia in the first round. Coach Lee Sung-yuan told CNA that last week's victory has indeed boosted Su Li-yang's confidence. "We are now observing whether he can recover his physical condition in time over the next few days." Additionally, Liu Chuan-heng and Hsu Yin-hsuan, who also won the mixed doubles title at the US Open, will face Indonesian pair Andre Timotius Tololiu and Serena Kani in their first match this week. Meanwhile, Liu Chuan-heng and Chen Cheng-kuan, partnering in the men's doubles, will have to start from the qualifying rounds. Liu Chuan-heng stated that competing in two doubles events is indeed tiring, but he hopes to go all the way in both. Therefore, maintaining physical fitness is crucial. "I personally feel that both men's doubles and mixed doubles are improving, and I hope to achieve the results I desire this year." (Editor: Lee Heng-shan) 1150630 Stand with facts.
