Calbee Inc. announced that it will release “Crisp Black Pepper Flavor,” a new limited-time product from its molded potato chip brand “Crisp,” at convenience stores across Japan from Monday, May 25, 2026. The product will also be available for a limited time at stores other than convenience stores from Monday, June 15. “Crisp” is a mashed potato chip known for its crunchy texture. Rather than slicing raw potatoes, the product is made by forming dough from potatoes that have first been processed into flakes, then frying it. Calbee first launched the tube-packaged “Potato Chips Crisp” in August 2016, then renewed the product as “Crisp” in March 2024 with bag packaging. The change reduced packaging material weight by about 80% and also enabled improvements to the seasoning process, since the chips no longer needed to be aligned inside a tube. As a result, the flavor became more even and enjoyable through the aftertaste. The market for spicy flavors has been growing in recent years. “Black Pepper Flavor” was first launched in October 2017 and had been sold year-round as a regular product before sales ended in July 2022. In response to customer requests for its return, Calbee decided to bring it back. The new product combines a fragrant, refreshing, spicy black pepper aroma with a satisfying crunchy bite, designed for consumers who enjoy a moderate kick suited to early summer. The product contains 45g and will be sold at an open price, with an estimated retail price of around 140 yen including tax. The actual release date may vary by retailer, and some stores may not carry the product or may stop sales once sold out.
