L’ECHOPPE, operated by BAYCREW’S Co., Ltd. (Head office: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; Director and CEO: Masayoshi Komine), will launch WUD “ROOT” on Saturday, May 16. When considering summer sandals, striking a balance between elegance and comfort can be surprisingly difficult. Wooden clogs have a distinctive mood and refined look, but they can become tiring after long wear. Recovery sandals, on the other hand, are remarkably comfortable, yet often carry a strongly sporty impression. L’ECHOPPE selected WUD, a factory brand from Verona, Italy, as something that sits right between the two. WUD is a highly skilled factory brand known for collaborations with CELINE and Alexander McQueen, and for its long history of producing footwear for Dr.Scholl. Its defining feature is an original sole that combines wood and rubber. The wooden sole, made from beech wood, offers not only visual beauty but also antibacterial properties. By combining it with recycled rubber as cushioning material, the design softens the hardness typically associated with wooden soles and creates a naturally walkable feel. The sandals come in two colors: white and black. The white version uses synthetic leather, while the black version uses recycled suede made by reprocessing offcuts and other materials. Even in the same shape, the different materials give each pair a distinct expression. Even in summer, when outfits tend to become lighter, these sandals avoid looking too casual and retain a refined impression. As they are worn, the color and texture of the wood will gradually change, turning them into a pair that feels uniquely personal. These are sandals that are not only about comfort, nor only about fashion, but naturally achieve both.
