Atom Co., Ltd. will present Sayaka Toda's solo exhibition "Where Seeds Drift Ashore" at COURT YARD HIROO, a multifunctional cultural facility in Hiroo, Tokyo, starting July 3, 2026. This exhibition is by Ms. Toda, who previously shared her bookshelf as part of last year's Artist Bookshelf project. The show will create a layered, multifaceted space unique to Toda, who continues to work across two media: photography and painting. We warmly invite you to attend. Exhibition Overview Dates: July 3 (Fri), 2026 – July 25 (Sat), 2026 Hours: 11:00–18:00 Closed: Sundays and holidays Opening Reception: July 3, 17:00–20:00 The exhibition juxtaposes photographs of landscapes and objects taken in Okinawa—visited for the first time in 20 years to attend a friend's wedding—with paintings depicting canna flowers found at that location. "Photography" represents fragments of a gaze directed outward toward the external world, while "painting" embodies the accumulation of time stored within. As viewers move between these two media, the depicted subjects transform from mere personal records into symbolic memories, connecting to the histories inscribed in the land and the presence of others. Just as seeds carried by wind and ocean currents take root in distant lands, individual encounters and memories also drift across time and space, arriving to sprout new narratives. Profile Sayaka Toda Born in 1988 in Saitama Prefecture; completed graduate studies in Western Painting, Department of Fine Arts, Graduate School of Women's Art University. Initially active primarily in painting, Toda now works across multiple media including photography, video, and installation, exploring themes such as "beauty and ugliness" and "memory and forgetting," often using motifs such as plants and the female body. In recent years, she has created works addressing questions arising from close personal relationships—such as family and friends—as well as issues related to gender.
