Kumon Roshin (1876-1942), born in Tokushima during the Meiji era, was a Sumiyoshi-ha painter who studied under Mori Gyofuin, a disciple of the Tokushima Domain's official painter Morizumi Kanjaku. While actively engaged in creative work from the Meiji to early Showa periods, achieving recognition in numerous exhibitions such as the National Industrial Exhibition and the Japan Art Association exhibitions, he also interacted with businessmen and financiers in his hometown of Tokushima, creating works in response to their commissions. This special exhibition will feature the first public display of "The Illustrated Scroll of Sarashina Diary" (owned by the Chugai Sangyo Co., Ltd. Harada Yasusaburo Collection), completed over approximately 10 years at the request of Yasusaburo Harada (1884-1982), a prominent figure in Japan's business world and an honorary citizen of Tokushima City (the "Illustrated Scroll of Sarashina Diary" will be exhibited until September 23). By also displaying works by Kanjaku Morizumi, Gyofuin Mori, and others alongside Roshin's, we aim to introduce the lineage of Sumiyoshi-ha painters connected to Tokushima who were passed down to the modern era.
